How 4D Baby Scans Work and Why Parents Love Them

Seeing your baby on screen is always a magical experience, but 4D scans take it to a whole new level. Instead of a flat black-and-white image, you can watch your little one moving in real time, complete with facial expressions, stretches, and tiny kicks. At our Consett clinic, these scans are some of the most loved appointments by expectant parents.

What Is a 4D Baby Scan?

A 4D scan is essentially a 3D ultrasound in motion. Traditional 2D scans show a flat cross-section of your baby, while 3D captures a still image in more detail. With 4D, the fourth dimension is time – meaning you see your baby moving live on screen.

It’s safe, painless, and uses the same ultrasound technology as a regular scan, just with more advanced imaging.

When Is the Best Time for a 4D Scan?

The best window for a 4D scan is usually between 24 and 32 weeks. At this stage, your baby has developed enough fat to show facial features clearly, but still has space to move around.

Earlier than 24 weeks, your baby may look less defined, while later than 32 weeks, space can become limited, making it harder to get clear images.

Why Parents Love 4D Scans

Parents often tell us that their 4D scan is one of the highlights of pregnancy. Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Bonding experience – Seeing your baby yawn, smile, or stretch makes the connection feel even more real.
  • Family involvement – Many parents bring partners, children, or grandparents along to share the special moment.
  • Keepsakes – You can take home printed images, digital copies, or even a video of your baby moving.
  • Reassurance – As well as giving you precious memories, the scan can also check baby’s wellbeing and development.

What Happens During the Appointment

Just like a standard ultrasound, a small amount of gel will be placed on your tummy before the sonographer gently moves the probe across your skin. You’ll see your baby live on screen, and we’ll capture the best images and clips for you to keep.

We’ll always do our best to get clear pictures, but sometimes your baby might be camera shy. If their position makes it tricky, we may offer a rescan so you don’t miss out.

A Keepsake to Treasure

A 4D scan is more than just a medical appointment – it’s a memory you’ll treasure long after your pregnancy. Parents often tell us that they feel even more connected to their baby afterwards, especially when they notice familiar features like a nose, chin, or smile.

In summary: 4D baby scans are a safe, exciting way to see your baby in motion before birth. At our Consett clinic, parents love the bonding experience, the keepsakes, and the chance to share the moment with loved ones.
